The Mormon Church justifies its existance by claiming that a total apostasy occured, during which no one on earth had the authority to act in the name of Jesus. Therefore Joseph Smith had to restore this authority. If this authority did exist somewhere else then Joseph should have gone and joined that church instead of starting another.
